Several extensive appendices provide the necessary reference material needed while creating Doom/Doom 2 levels. If you must use the text version, you will need a graphics viewer capable of displaying both .GIF and .JPG files to view the graphics. Obviously, you will also not benefit from the formatting of the word processor version. The text version was assembled using Word Pad for Win95; you may find that it displays best in that text editor. Word97 users must have both of the appropriate graphics filters (.GIF and .JPG, included with Word97) installed in Word97 for the graphics to display. In addition, Word97 users need to use a specific directory structure. This is necessary because the graphics are saved as links in the Word97-format file rather than being embedded. This was done to save disk space and dowload time. If you experience trouble seeing the graphics in the Word97 version of the Handbook, you may have to manually re-insert the graphic files into the document. The most common cause for this kind of problem is an incorrect directory structure. The Handbook archive file was created using WinZip (http://www.winzip.com) and includes the correct directory structure. Unziping the Handbook archive, keeping directory structure intact, is the preferred method of installation.
